Many heavy manufacturing companies are involved in the production of cranes.

The truck and trailer mounted cranes from Koehring are designed to be able to travel on roads and highways so that there is no need for special equipment for the crane to be transported to the job site. In the hydraulic cranes, the hydraulics cylinder is used either to directly lift the load or move the jib or the beam that carries another lifting device.

Koehring was acquired by Terex Corporation in 1987. Many years before that Koehring had entered into a partnership with the Ishiakawajima Heavy Industries of Japan in 1952 to establish the Ishiakawajima Koehring Company as a technical/capital partnership. This partnership lasted until 1977. The relationship came to a full circle when Terex opened discussion from 1998 onwards to buy cranes from Ishiakawajima industries.

Currently Terex is based at Westport in Connecticut and at the end of 2003; it had revenues of $3.9 billion USD. Among the many brand names that Terex deals in, Koehring is one of its earliest and most reputed. Currently Terex is involved in building a franchise under its own brand name and as part of this program it is migrating the historic brand name for many of its products to the Terex brand and in some cases it is using the historic brand name in conjunction with the Terex brand for a transitional period of time
